Police Reveal Separatists’ Plans To Attack Nigeria’s Commercial Nerve, Lagos
Plans by the proscribed separatist group Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to attack Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, have been exposed by the police.
Police in Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, said they have uncovered plots by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to attack soft targets in the state.
Hakeem Odumosu, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, who made the revelation during a security meeting in Lagos on Monday, May 10, said the threat by IPOB has been put on the radar of the Command’s intelligence gathering and other security services in the state.
Lagos State has a population of over 15 million and is arguably the most economically important state of the country.
Odumosu added that the state’s police command has also taken note of threats by agitators of Oodua Republic with 24 other Yoruba separatist groups identified, noting that they were being closely monitored, Daily Trust reported.
According to the Commissioner, strategies were in place to neutralise their activities.
He, however, enjoined all residents to be vigilant at all times and report any suspicious person(s) or movement to the appropriate security agencies.
“Let us adopt the slogan of ‘when you see something, say something,” he said.
Odumosu further disclosed that another major security challenge faced by the command is the use of commercial motorcycles in the state.
“Foremost amongst these, is the quest of the government to expand the land transportation system and provide employment opportunities to the citizens.”
“This made the government to, at the onset, grant approval for commercial motorcycle operations in the state with necessary legislation to regulate their activities.”
“The government’s good intention of providing additional means of land transportation and creating jobs for the teeming unemployed youths has been negated by the atrocities being perpetrated by the Okada operators in the State.”
“This includes the use of Okada as a veritable tool to commit a crime and get away with it by hoodlums; disrespect to traffic rules and regulations; the Okada operators becoming a nuisance and reckless on our roads, resulting in avoidable accidents with attendant consequences on human life.”
In Feb. 2020, the state government announced the ban on the operations of commercial motorcyclists in some local governments. The authorities said the ban was needed because of safety concerns.
