Officials Rescue 54 From Hellish, Illegal ‘Correctional Center’ in Zamfara

Zamfara State Government officials on Saturday raided an illegal “correctional center” in Gusau, and rescued 54 malnourished and traumatised victims from the facility.

The State Commissioner for Special Duties, Alhaji Mohammed Saddiq Maiturare, led a team of security operatives to the home in deference to an order from the Governor, Mr Bello Matawalle.

The governor gave the directive for a crack down on such facilities after receiving information on their operations.

The team found the victims, comprising of male and female inmates, chained in a squalid house, which serves as the centre operated by Malam Iliyasu Abdullahi Gamagiwa.

The inmates were in pitiable conditions and looked dehydrated.

The operator, Malam Gamagiwa, said that the centre had existed for many years and that all the inmates were brought to him by their families.

“They are all delinquents, truants and wayward people I have here.

“Some of them are thieves, some of them take drugs and some of them even beat their parents. Ours is to correct them,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Governor has directed that the centre be closed and the operators prosecuted.
