Nigerian Troops Thwart Attack On Base In Borno

The military killed several terrorists and recovered different calibres of weapons.

Nigerian troops on Sunday, June 27 with air support from the Air Force, thwarted an attack on a base in the Garrison town of Banki near the border with Cameroon.

The security breach and attack were conducted by a squad employing tactics associated with Boko Haram indicating that the fighters were part of those absorbed into Islamic State for West Africa Province (ISWAP).

Photographs of weapons recovered during the encounter included AK pattern rifles, FN MAG machine,  SPG-9 lightweight anti-tank and anti-armoured recoilless gun and what appeared to be type 85 heavy machine gun.

The configuration of the seized armoured gun truck with the mounted SPG-9 recoilless and heavy machine guns used as an anti-personnel and anti-aircraft weapon appeared in recent propaganda photos of an attack in Bama axis.

According to the Army spokesperson, 12 terrorists were killed when the base at Bula Yobe in Borno State was attacked by fighters on gun trucks and several motorcycles.

“Sadly, during the encounter, two soldiers paid the supreme sacrifice, while five others sustained varying degrees of injury and have been evacuated by the Air component of OPHK to a medical facility, where they are currently receiving medical attention,” the Army spokesperson said.

The conflict ravaging the region has led to the death of over 35,000 people and displaced millions.
