Troops of Nigerian Army backed by air support of the Nigerian Air Force on Wednesday repelled an attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Askira Uba Borno State, Northeast Nigeria.
Askira Uba is about 190km from Maiduguri, the state capital, and shares boundaries with Biu, Chibok, Gwoza and Hawul Local Government Areas.
The counter-assault led to the death of a number of ISWAP fighters and destruction of several gun trucks and at least one armoured personnel carrier (APC), HumAngle was informed.
The destroyed APC appeared to be a Nigerian Army FV103 Spartan tracked carrier similar to one of those used in the ongoing operation Tura Takai Bango against insurgents.
One of FV103 with a fabricated turret to protect the gunner was earlier captured in Gorgi town in Damboa Local Government of the state and shown in ISWAP propaganda.
It’s unclear if the same FV103 APC captured in Jan. was used for the Askira Uba attack.
Several rifles and heavy machine guns were also seized in the counter-assault.
Similarly In Jan. insurgents attacked the town of Womdeo in Askira Uba forcing residents to flee.
