Nigerian troops deployed in Mafa on Friday pushed back an attempt by Boko Haram insurgents to storm the town, about 55km east of the Borno capital, Maiduguri.

In November 2020, dozens of rice farmers from Zabarmari, a town in Jere Local Government Area of the state, were killed by the Abubakar Shekau faction of Boko Haram at Koshebe village in Mafa Local Government Area.
Koshebe was a farming village for migrants and locals but the insecurity in the area displaced the locals.
Mafa is one of the local government areas the Borno State Government is investing in to rebuild and resettle displaced persons.
About 500 households returned to Ajiri in August 2020, with the state supporting them with low-cost housing and financial aid.
“I am happy to see you people living comfortably after your relocation from IDPs Camps to your ancestral home.
“As a government, we will do everything possible to support you. We are going to provide Ajiri community with a befitting school, hospital and market stalls among other social infrastructure.
“I am appealing to all of you to continue to pray for the restoration of peace and cooperate with the security agencies in the fight against terrorism,” Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum said during his visit to the area in September last year.
