Major, 2 Other Officers And Soldiers Killed In Ambush Attack In Katsina State

On Saturday, July 18, 2020, a contingent of Nigerian troops of Exercise Sahel Sanity on a mission to clear a terrorist camp in Shimfida village In Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State, Northwest Nigeria, was ambushed and came under sniper and enemy fire.

Three young officers – a major, lieutenant and second lieutenant – alongside 17 soldiers were killed while several others were injured in the operation, according to multiple sources.

Military sources could not ascertain the names of the service men immediately but said a major, lieutenants and their troops were caught up in the ambush.

Sources revealed that the soldiers were in Hilux vehicles without armoured protection, making them vulnerable to enemy fire.

The incident occurred shortly after a bomb exploded and killed at least 5 children near a farm in Malumfashi area of the state on Saturday.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, launched Exercise Sahel Sanity on July 6 as part of the 2020 Army Day celebration to tackle banditry and violence in Northwest Nigeria.
