Chad: Minister Receives Released Hostages Held By Boko Haram

Chadian Minister of Public Health and National Solidarity, Abdoulaye Sabre Fadoul, on Tuesday, received three Chadian hostages who were abducted by Boko Haram 10 months ago.

The three hostages were abducted in December 2019, between Ngouboua and Tchoukoutalia by 35 heavily-armed Boko Haram terrorists.

The hostages, Dr. Besso Ernest Mahamat, Chief Medical Officer for Baga Sola district, Azer Adoum, a senior nurse and their driver Ibrahim Adam, were released last week ten kilometres away from Chadian territory and escorted by the army to Daboua in the Lake Chad province.

At the official ceremony of their reception by Minister Abdoulaye Sabre Fadoul, one of the hostages, Dr. Besso Ernest Mahamat called for a minute of silence in honour of two Chadian soldiers who were executed in their presence during their incarceration by Boko Haram.

Dr. Besso Mahamat said a contributing factor to their liberation was the attacks by Chadian soldiers of the “Operation Boma Anger” on the Boko Haram hideout where they were held.

“The reaction of the Chadian state to our abduction within the context of the “Operation Boma Anger” was ferocious and was the prime factor in our release”, Dr. Besso Mahamat declared.

He revealed that many Boko Haram terrorists were killed during the attacks while those who were wounded were taken care of by himself and the nurse.

“After the attacks by the Chadian army, the Boko Haram fighters brought many of their colleagues who had been wounded. They did not know what to do with them so they appealed to me to do something.

“I treated them as a doctor. I know they have done a lot of harm to this country, but to save my skin, I was obliged to treat them. It was after this gesture on my part that they decided to release us”, Dr. Mahamat revealed.

The Chief Medical Officer for Baga Sola district revealed that during the period of his incarceration, he operated upon about 300 persons, mostly Boko Haram fighters.

He extended his thanks to the Chadian head of state and soldiers of the “Operation Boma Anger” for carrying out the operations which contributed to their liberation.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Abdoulaye Sabre Fadoul revealed that while serving as Director of Cabinet of President Idris Deby Itno, the head of state closely followed efforts at releasing the hostages, adding “there are certain things that cannot be recounted”.

“We must be solidly united in the face of terrorism. This sad moment would serve as a lesson to us to reinforce our links between the children of this country to confront the terrorism which is being perpetrated in our nation”, the Minister of Public Health and National Solidarity declared.
