Twenty-four hours after recapturing Yalinga town, chief town of the Haute-Kotto district, from Coalition of Patriots for Change (CPC) rebels, Russian mercenaries accompanied by their Syrian allies are en-route Sam Ouandja, in the Ouadda council not far from the Central African Republic border with Sudan.
According to local sources, the presence of the Russian mercenaries in Yalinga for up to 24 hours was to wait for the arrival of helicopters which eventually transported some of their dead and wounded colleagues who died during fighting with CPC rebels in Manzala, 24 kilometres from Bria, and at Kpava, a council situated 72 kilometres on the Yalinga highway to Bria.
Their final destination is not yet known but many sources speculate that their objective is to reach the Bakouma town in Mbomou, southeast of the Central African Republic.
The town of Sam Ouandja serves as an important arms trafficking hub by armed groups in the Central African Republic.
The town also hosts important artisanal diamond mining sites.
