Bello Muhammed Matawalle, Governor of Zamfara State, Northwest Nigeria has facilitated the unconditional release of 11 abducted persons without paying any form of ransom to their abductors, a statement from the office of the governor reveals.
Jamilu Iliyasu, the Press Secretary to the Governor explained in the statement that the rescued victims were received Saturday night at the Government House in Gusau, the state capital.
Iliyasu quoted the Governor as saying that the carrot and stick approach deployed to get the abducted persons released would be continued and enforced towards the curving ungodly activities in the state, and also assured amnesty for repentant bandits.
The victims, 10 males and a female are residents of Bukkuyum Local Government Area, of the state, the governor’s media aide said/
The governor, he said, had directed the State Commissioner for Health to give the victims medical attention to check their health condition before their family can have access to them.
Iliyasu further stated that Matawalle assured the people of Zamafara State that his administration would not rest until total peace is restored in all parts of the state.
The Governor appealed to the bandits in Zamfara State to surrender their weapons and be good citizens.
He, however, warned that those who refused to embrace peace would face the full wrath of the law.
Iliyasu disclosed that Abubakar Dauran, the state Commissioner for Security and Home Affairs who handed over the rescued persons to the governor explained that the peace initiative of the governor led to their rescue following a meeting convened by Matawalle with all critical stakeholders from Bukuyyum Local Government Area held on Thursday.
Dauran added a lot of the bandits are now repenting from their criminal activities and accepting the peace and reconciliation accord introduced by Governor Matawalle’s administration.
