WFP Supports Vulnerable Persons Affected By COVID-19 In Kano

World Food Programme (WFP) has commenced the distributions of palliatives to assist about 67,000 low budget and powerless persons affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in Kano State.

The UN Basket Fund Project will only reach the most affected states, such as Lagos, Federal Capital Territory and Kano, the WFP Representative in Nigeria Paul Howe, said.

Howe said at the launch of the project in Kano State on Monday that COVID-19 had caused damage beyond health issues across the globe.

He said, “COVID-19 has affected the agricultural sector; this is the first of its kind that WFP is outreaching the urban areas

“However, about 200,000 persons will be assisted with cash and food items in Kano, Abuja and Lagos.

“Donation of 2,000 metric tonnes of food items by the Federal Government through the national strategic grains reserve, the collaboration with the Federal Government will ease agricultural crisis in the country. ”

Howe said that the project would be implemented to ensure a quick kick-off support towards curbing COVID-19 challenges.

The Secretary to Kano State Government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, commended the effort of the organisation to help the weak.

“The state has supported youths with special skills acquisition programmes to tackle economic crisis in Kano,” Alhaji said.

He described the WFP effort as a welcome development that would grant many opportunities to raise capitals again to revive their lost businesses.
