Terrorists attacked Wereng Community of Riyom Local Government Area Plateau State on Monday, October 5, 2020, shot, injured and killed some persons, including a traditional leader, a witness said.
The terrorists, according to an eyewitness, invaded the community around 9:00p.m. and shot sporadically, killing and injuring everyone on sight.
A traditional ruler-designate of Wereng, Chungyang Mwadkon, who was due for coronation, was shot and killed while he was trying to escape from the attackers, the Nation newspaper reported
“We first thought they were vigilantes because they were wearing boots and security kits like community police until they started shooting at us,” Kim Francis, 32, told Nation.
“They kept shooting and picking their expended bullet shells as they moved,” said Francis who was shot in the leg.
The terrorists killed three other members of a family in their compound while another three others were killed along the road, the witness said.
The Commissioner of Police, Plateau Command, Edward Egbuka, confirmed the attack and described it as unfortunate.
“In spite of series of peace meetings we have been holding with the various parties in the communities, we are still experiencing this kind of ugly incident, thereby truncating the peace in the state,” he said.
