Students protested on the streets of Kano City, Northwest Nigeria, on Wednesday following the closure of all schools, including tertiary institutions, by the state government.
The Kano State Government on Tuesday evening announced the closure of all schools in its territory due to the spike in COVID-19 cases and insecurity in the Northeast region.
The students of Sa’datu Rimi College of Education, Kano State Polytechnic and Aminu Kano College of Islamic and Legal Studies stormed the streets and school premises to show dissatisfaction over the decision.
The students held placards with different inscriptions against the closure and shouted: “Education has been hijacked, no more education for the masses, government open schools.”
HumAngle reports that while the entrances of school premises were closed, students stood at the gates and demonstrated.
In an interview, Aisha Muhammad Galadanchi, a student of Aminu Kano College of Islamic and Legal Studies, said, “the closure of schools again is improper.
” Previously, when school was closed, we were not happy because it has delayed our progress of studies, currently as exams are about to start, the government ordered the closure of schools again; this is unfair.”
Hamisu Ahmad Gwale, a student of Kano State Polytechnic, expressed displeasure over the action.
“We have been on holidays for over five months due to COVID-19 pandemic. We were happy when we heard the government announce the reopening of schools but now a sad story of closing schools emerged, we are very sad.
“I am not happy with the government because we don’t know the reasons behind closing schools, this should be my final year and now they are extending my stay unnecessarily,” Gwale said.
Habibu Nasiru Uba, a student of Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, said, “we were told that the state of insecurity in Katsina State is what triggered the government to close schools.
“It is unfortunate; when I was thinking my exams are ending on Friday but now everything has changed.
“The government should review its decision and allow students to write their exams before closing schools again.”
The Provost, Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Dr Yahaya Isa Bunkure, said the closure was due what happened in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State where terrorists abducted over 300 students on Friday.
He added the Kano State Government was being proactive by taking the decision.
