On October 20, military men in combat fatigue and armed with assault rifles invaded the Lekki toll gate where thousands of protesters have been demonstrating against police brutality.

Earlier in the day, The Lagos State government declared a 24-hour curfew across the state.

However, protesters in Nigeria’s economic capital continued with their demands for an end to police brutality and justice victims refused to leave the toll gate.

A witness told the BBC he had counted about 20 bodies and at least 50 injured after soldiers rolled into the Lekki in darkness and began firing their weapons.

Protesters against police brutality in Nigeria began campaigning for international sanctions after incidents of security forces employing force against protesters.

The new ‘Magnitsky’-style sanctions regime will target those who have been involved in some of the gravest human rights violations and abuse around the world.

Activists are asking the UK Government to employ the new sanctions regime to impose bans on members of the Nigerian Government and police involved in any human rights abuse by the Nigeria Police Force.

The campaign has already gathered signatures required for the UK Government to respond and the parliament to consider a debate on the petitions.
