Police Move To Restore Order In Lagos, Ogun Axis

The Nigeria Police Force headquarters on Monday made a massive deployment of personnel to the Lagos and Ogun State axis where communities have set up vigilance groups to deal with incessant robbery attacks.

The measure thus confirmed HumAngle reports on clashes between vigilantes and robbers in the area, especially since the lockdown over COVID-19.

Residents in Abule-Egba, Lagos, as well as Sango-Otta and Ifo in Ogun State, cried out for help from the police to protect them from attacks from armed robbers.

Many of the residents said on social media on Saturday and Sunday that they could not sleep as they kept vigil all night to ward off robbers in their communities.

They said that they took turns working as vigilantes rather than sleep.

In a statement on Monday, Frank Mba, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in-charge of Force Public Relations , said the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, had ordered DIG Peter Babatunde Ogunyanwo to take charge of operations in the area.

Ogunyanwo, a Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), is to lead efforts to restore public confidence and order in the Southwest geo-political zone. Mba said.

He said that Adamu ordered “the intelligence and operational assets of the Force, comprising Police Mobile Force (PMF) Units, Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS), Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and the Special Tactical Squad (STS)” to deal with the situation.

Already, 191 suspects have been arrested in connection with the unrest which has arisen from the clashes.

Adamu also ordered all Assistant Inspectors General of Police in 12 Zonal Commands to ensure they had the proper protocol to keep citizens secure, MBA said.

He encouraged citizens to contact the police should any criminal activity arise in their communities.
