Two days after arresting two of its personnel over the killing of a 17-year-old girl, the Police Command in Lagos on Sunday May 31,. arrested a police Inspector, Monday Gabriel, for allegedly shooting his colleague, one Sgt. Felix Okago to death while on duty.
The spokesman for the Police Command in Lags State, DSP Bala Elkana,
confirmed the arrest to journalists and said that the incident happened about 4.30a.m. on Sunday.
He said the Area A Command received a distress call that one Insp. Monday Gabriel from No. 21 Police Mobile Force Squadron, Abuja, on special duty in a Federal Government facility in Ikoyi Lagos had shot a colleague.
Elkana said the suspect went berserk, started shooting sporadically and killed one Sgt. Felix Okago who was also on duty with him.
He said some other persons within the vicinity were lucky to escape unhurt, while the suspect attempted to escape but was caught.
“In an attempt to escape, he took a patrol van and headed towards Third Mainland Bridge, shooting as he was escaping.
“He was intercepted by policemen from Bariga Division along Akoka, disarmed and handcuffed.
“The rifle and vehicle were recovered. The corpse of the deceased sergeant is deposited in the mortuary for autopsy, while the .inspector is taken to Police Hospital for medical examination as he presented signs of mental depression.
“The command deeply condoles with the family of the fallen colleague who paid the supreme price in service to his fatherland,” Elkana said.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos, CP Hakeem Odumosu has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of State CID to carry out a thorough investigation into the matter.
