The police on Tuesday launched the Community Policing Initiative by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu, aimed at curbing crime in the country.
The project, launched by the Commissioner of Police in Zamfara State,
CP Usman Nagogo, on behalf the IGP, began with the constitution of the Policing Advisory Committee in the 14 local government areas of the state.
In his address, the commissioner said that the IGP in his commitment to address the security challenges in the country came up with the initiative with the aim of engaging members of the community in matters relating to their security.
He said, ” the idea of Community Policing is to complement the security agents operating in their areas as they cannot cover all nooks and crannies of the state.”
Recently, HumAngle reported that community leaders in Zamfara State clamoured for direct involvement in the security of their localities. This initiative therefore is an answer to the cries of the people.
The police commissioner inaugurated the committees in the palaces of emirs in the state ostensibly to drive home the message that the responsibility to secure communities belongs to the people.
Inaugurating the 25-member committee for Gusau Local Government Area, Nagogo, urged the members to stay true to their commitment and fulfil dutifully the responsibilities given to them.
The inauguration which took place at the palace of the Emir of Gusau, Alhaji Ibrahim Bello, was attended by the Gusau Local Government chairman, traditional rulers, community and religious leaders.
Also, the inauguration of the Community Advisory Committees for Maradun and Bungudu local government areas took place at the palaces of the Emir of Maradun, Alhaji Garba Muhammad Tambari, and the Emir of Bungudu, Alhaji Attahiru Hassan, respectively.
While the committee for Maradun Local Government Area has 32 members, the committee for Bagudu Local Government Area has 15 members. The ceremonies were also attended by the local government chairmen, traditional rulers and other stakeholders.
While inaugurating the committees, the commissioner of police also enjoined them to have the fear of God and uphold the trust reposed on them.
In his response, the Emir of Maradun, Tambari, thanked the IGP for giving them a role in the policing of their areas, while the Emir of Bungudu, Hassan,
pledged more support and cooperation with the police to ensure the success of the initiative.
The commissioner also inaugurated the committees for Anka and Bukkuyum local government areas at the palaces of the Emir of Bukkuyum, Alhaji Mohammad Usman, and the Emir of Anka, Alhaji Attahiru Mohammad Ahmad, respectively.
In his response, the Emir of Bukkuyum, Usman, thanked the IGP for introducing what the people had been clamouring for over the years.
Also, Ahmad, the Emir of Anka and Chairman of Zamfara State Council of Traditional Rulers, expressed delight over the initiative.
