Police in Katsina State said they have foiled two attempted terrorist attacks in the state.

Police in Katsina State, Northwest Nigeria have foiled an attempted terrorist attack in the Malumfashi Local Government Area of the state.

Gambo Isah, police spokesperson in the state made this known in a press statement issued on Monday, July 19, 2021.

According to him, terrorists known locally as bandits rode on motorcycles on Saturday, Jul 17, 2021, abducted a 45-year-old man in Tafkin Jege village, Kafur Local Government Area.

“On July 17, 2021, at about 11:02 p.m., bandits on motorcycles, armed with an AK 47 rifle, blocked a feeder road at Layin Minister, Malumfashi LGA, and kidnapped a 45-year-old man from Tafkin Jege village, Kafur LGA,” Isah said.

He said a team of police operatives “led by one DPO Kankara, intercepted them at Unguwar Nakome, Yargoje village, Kankara,” where they engaged the terrorists in a gun battle, after which they rescued the kidnapped victim.

He also added that an AK 47 rifle was recovered “in the course of profiling the scene.”

The police spokesperson said that a similar development took place at about 5 a.m. WAT, on the same day.

According to him, DPO Kankara who had led operatives to rescue the abducted man had equally led them to Majifa village, Kankara, where they engaged some terrorists in a gun duel, after which they recovered about 36 cows stolen by the terrorists.

The terrorists, he said, escaped with gunshot wounds.

Isah said that “a search party is still combing the area with a view to arresting the fleeing bandits.”

“The Command urges members of the public to continue to cooperate with security agencies by giving them credible information,” the statement read.

Katsina State, like other states in Northwest Nigeria has witnessed terrorist attacks in recent times.

The most daring of these attacks was the abduction of over 300 school children from a Government Secondary School in Kankara.

The government of the state had, as a result of the abduction, shut down some schools in the state, but had ordered their reopening after three months of closure.
