Police Arrest Six Suspected Kidnappers In Abuja

Police in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital have arrested six suspected kidnappers who are believed to be members of a kidnapping syndicate terrorising the city.

A statement by Mariam Yusuf, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and spokesperson of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police command seen by HumAngle on Sunday indicated that the suspected kidnappers were arrested in the Apo area of the Abuja Municipal Area Council.

Abuja, the country’s administrative seat is fast sliding into the hands of criminals following incessant abductions of residents.

Nodim Okechukwu, a journalist with The Punch Newspaper and three other persons were abducted in the suburb of the FCT Abuja on Feb. 3. HumAngle gathered that the journalist regained his freedom on Sunday.


The police spokesperson said the arrest of the suspected kidnappers followed an intelligence report about three persons they abducted recently. She did not state if the Punch journalist was among those rescued.

She stated that two of the three kidnapped victims were rescued by the police during the operation.

Police disclosed that the suspects were arrested by policemen on routine patrol while attempting to relocate one of their victims.

The PPRO said the command had deployed covert and overt crime-fighting strategies to strengthen security across the FCT, especially in areas with cumbersome terrain.

She added that police were working closely with sister security agencies, key stakeholders and community leaders to rid the FCT of criminal elements.

Yusuf called on the residents of the capital city to be law-abiding and vigilant to the security situations in their areas.

She said any report of a security breach within the city should be immediately reported to the police or put a call to the following helplines 08032003913, 08061581938, 07057337653 and 08028940883.
