Police Arrest 2 Cops Over Death Of 17-Year-Old Girl

The Police Command in Lagos State has arrested two policemen attached to the Bariga Police Division for questioning over the killing of a 17-year-old girl, Miss Tina Ezekwe, on Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos, Tuesday, May 26.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Bala Elkane, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), told journalists in Lagos on Friday that the cops needed to explain the circumstances surrounding the killing of Tina about 10.45 p.m. on the day.

Elkane said the policemen allegedly fired shots, which killed Tina and injured Musa Yakubu, 35, from their checkpoint along Berger by Third Mainland Bridge.

He named the suspects as Assistant Superintendent of Police Theophilus Otobo and Inspector Oguntoba Olamigoke.


According to him, in circumstances yet to be determined, Yakubu and Tina were hit by a stray bullet at Berger Iyana Oworo Bus stop at the time.

“The bullet pierced through the left upper side of her lap. And she was rushed to hospital by a team of policemen led by led by the Divisional Police Officer.

“The battle to save her life lasted for two days, she died on 28th May, 2020 at about 9.29 p.m. while on admission. The second person is in stable condition,” he said.

Elkane said that the two police officers suspected to have carried out the shooting had been subjected to internal disciplinary proceedings, stressing that if found culpable, they would be arraigned in court.

He said the Commissioner of Police in Lagos, CP Hakeem Odumosu, was saddened by the incident and had ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The spokesman said that the police contacted the families of the victims from the day of the incident.

“The command deeply sympathises with the family and friends of the deceased person. The Commissioner of Police calls for calm and assures the family that the perpetrators of this dastardly act will face the full weight of the law.

“He reiterated his stance on zero tolerance for impunity,” Elkane said, and added: “Members of the public will be updated on the outcome of the investigation.”
