NSA Inaugurates Committee To Review National Cybersecurity Policy

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Maj.-Gen. Babagana Munguno (rtd), has inaugurated a committee to identify missing gaps in the National Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy, 2014.

The committee, comprising experts from public and private sectors, is expected to review the policy and present a draft for validation in November after which the NSA will forward it to President Muhammadu Buhari for further action.

The policy is updated every five years according to global cybersecurity standards and the current one was reviewed in 2014.

According to a statement from the Office of the National Security Adviser, the review is part of efforts to reposition the country to better exploit the benefits of the internet and cyber domain to enhance national peace, security and socio-economic wellbeing.

“This committee was constituted to identify the current gaps in the National Cybersecurity Strategy and Policy, 2014, articulate the various inputs of stakeholders and develop necessary frameworks to effectively mitigate evolving cyber threats and enhance Nigeria’s productive engagements in cyberspace,” Munguno said.

While inaugurating the committee in his office, the NSA said that new developments in the digital era had given way to transformation in business, governance and social interactions.

Munguno said updating the policy would solve the evolving cybersecurity threats facing Nigeria’s cyberspace according to global norms and standards.

He called on the committee members to adhere to the timelines and guidelines laid out for the review process.

The Chairman of the Committee, Abdul Hakeem Ajijola, said the new policy would reflect a policy that would touch the lives of the underserved and unborn children.

“We must factor in the under-served and unborn because they must live with the effects of the policies and strategic decisions that we make today,” he noted.
