Nigeria Police Probe Murder Of Former NBA Chairman
Officers attached to the Imo State division of the Nigerian Police Force, Southeast Nigeria, have started investigating the murder of the former Nigerian Bar Association, NBA chairman in the state.
Police in Owerri, Imo State, Southeast Nigeria have opened a murder inquiry into the grisly killing of Ndionyenma Nwankwo, a former Chairman of the state branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
Nwankwo was found dead in his office with stab wounds around his neck on Sunday, Ikeokwu Orlando, the Police Public Relation Officer in Imo State, said in a statement.
Chinedu Agu, the secretary to the Owerri branch of the NBA, narrated how the 64-year-old lawyer was found lying in a pool of blood in his office after his disappearance on Saturday.
Agu said the deceased had left home for work on Saturday but did not return on the said day, alerting his family of fear for his safety.
On Sunday morning when there was no news of him, his distraught family, he said, contacted one Ishmael Nkwocha with whom the deceased was sharing an office space located at 43 School Road, Owerri.
Nkwocha noticed âtraces of blood on the doorâ of the deceased office which alerted him to call in the police, Agu said.
A preliminary report by the police stated that a machete with bloodstains, suspected to have been used in attacking the late lawyer was found at the crime scene.
âOperatives of the Command moved to the scene (his office) and met the lifeless body of the lawyer in the pool of his own blood, with machete cuts on his neck,â the statement reads.
âTaking a further look around the office, a machete with bloodstains, suspected to have been the matchet used in inflicting the cuts on him, was found on the floor.
âIt was also discovered that his car and other yet to be identified items were taken away.â
Nasiru Mohammed, the State Commissioner of Police, has, however, ordered an investigation into the matter, pledging to bring the assailant to book.
The police were yet to identify the motive behind the gruesome murder.

Olumide Akpata, the NBA national President, said the loss of the deceased embittered him.
In a series of tweets on Sunday, Alpaca expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased, praying that âGod grants his family the fortitude to bear this loss.â
He called on the police to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
