Microsoft to Support Agri-tech and Smart Farming in Nigeria
Microsoft has signed a partnership with Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (Agra) to create a technology solution that will support 30 million farming households to have food security and engage in agricultural business across Africa.
The partnership under Microsoft’s 4Africa initiative will support Agra’s digital transformation targeting farmers in 11 African countries including Nigeria.
The collaboration will encourage the use of big data and Artificial Intelligence in the farming and agribusiness activities; working with governments in Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Ghana.
“We very much appreciate the opportunity to draw on Microsoft’s digital architecture support on digital ecosystems and big data platforms,” said Vanessa Adams, Vice President, Strategic Partnerships and Chief of Party at Agra.
The partnership, according to Business Daily, forms part of Microsoft ongoing investment in agri-tech across Africa, including a data-driven farming project designed to increase farm produce and reduce cost called FarmBeats.
“We’re excited to continue our work with Agra in building locally-relevant technology solutions that are mindful of challenges local farmers face, offering solutions to farmers and policy makers alike to deliver meaningful impact,” Microsoft 4Afrika Regional Director, Amrote Abdella said.
