An unknown number of persons in an 18-seater bus were burnt beyond recognition with the bus along Onitsha-Owerri Road, Anambra State, Southeast Nigeria, on Sunday after the vehicle summersaulted and caught fire.
The only person who was thrown out of the vehicle also died and was deposited in a nearby hospital morgue, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said.
The crash occurred on Amorka axis of the Onitsha-Owerri expressway, Andrew Kumapayi, the Sector Commander of FRSC in Anambra, added.
Speaking on behalf of the sector commander, the Route Commander, Kamal Musa, who is the acting Sector Public Education Officer, said the vehicle went up in flames after summasulting severally following a tyre burst.
“We recorded a lone fatal road crash suspected to have been caused by tyre burst and excessive speeding today at Omorka in Ihiala.
“This led the vehicle to summasult and the vehicle bursted into flames.
“Information available to the command says that all passengers on board were burnt beyond recognition along with the bus.
The corpse of the only male adult who jumped out of the vehicle in the process has been deposited at a morgue in Our Lady of Lourdes Ihiala,” he said.
He said men from Anambra State Fire Service had been contacted and that FRSC rescue team from Ihiala Unit Command were on ground to ensure free flow of traffic on the highway.
