Zulfalaru Alfa, popularly known as “Mai Siket”, has pleaded guilty to charges of raping 40 women and girls in three months.
On Wednesday, Mai Siket pleaded guilty at a Kano Magistrates’ Court for raping 40 women, including an 80-year-old woman, at Kwanar Dangora in Kiri Local Government Area of Kano State.
The Magistrate, however, adjourned the case and remanded the defendant in a custodial centre based on the request of the prosecutor.
The police prosecutor, Badamasi Gawuna, had pleaded with the court to adjourn the matter to a future date.
The Magistrate, Muhammad Hassan, granted the prosecutor’s request and adjourned the case until July 20 for continuation of hearing.
Cases of rape have been on the rise in Kano State recently with individuals arrested.
Statistics show that rape cases decreased by 3.2 per cent in the state.compared to 2019 records, according to the police.
The Police Command in Kano State said it had recorded no fewer than 42 rape cases since January.
The spokesman for the command, DSP Abdullahi Haruna Koyawa, said the number of cases dropped by 14 cases compared to the figure for 2019 when it recorded 56 cases over the same period.
Koyawa said, “we recorded 42 rape cases in the state between January till date.
“When you compare it with what was recorded in 2019 first half (January to June) which was 56 cases, it reduced by 14 cases.
“The cases indicated that 33.3 per cent of the rape incidents were committed in uncompleted buildings, 17.7 per cent at farmlands, while 15.6 per cent were carried out in shops and suspects residents respectively.
“Similarly, about 8.9 per cent were carried out in schools, 6.7 per cent in the victims’ residents and 2.2 per cent at market places.
The police urged residents of the state to report cases of molestation and other forms of abuse to the police as keeping quiet without reporting cases would encourage the perpetrators to further commit similar crime.
