Key Mastermind Of Kankara Abduction Injured In Deadly Clash Over Stolen Cattle

A notorious criminal, popularly known as  Dankarami who is also believed to be one of the masterminds of the Kankara School boys abduction is currently battling for survival due to injuries sustained in a clash between his gang and a rival group.

Dankarami is the head of an armed group notorious for cattle rustling, abduction and terrorizing communities in Katsina State, Northwest Nigeria.

He reportedly sustained serious injuries in a clash on  Jan. 23 between armed men belonging to Mani na Saleh mai dan doki and his gang at Illela village of Safana Local Government Area of Katsina.

At least 20 members of Dan Karami group were killed by the rival camp as they fought over control of rustled cattle herd. Nine civilians in the area were also killed in the crossfire.

Over 300 students of Government Science Secondary School Kankara were abducted on On Dec. 11, 2020, when armed men stormed the school and moved the students to a forest hideout.

Although the abduction was claimed by the Abubakar Shekau led Boko Haram, the students were freed after negotiations with the captors.

The kidnapping was a major spotlight on the interaction and alliance between violent extremist groups in the Northeast and violent groups terrorizing the Northwest.

Ethnic Rivalry and confrontation over control of livestock and territory have led to frequent battles between armed groups and the killing of leaders.

HumAngle reported in April 2020 that Dankarami is reputed among the bandits for going to other gangs’ territories to rustle livestock or seize ransom destined for other gangs.

In December 2020, state officials announced the death of a criminal kingpin Nasiru Kachalla after a dispute over a herd of rustled cattle ignited a battle between armed groups in a forest around the boundaries of Kajuru-Chikun Local Government of Kaduna State.

A violent confrontation in 2018,  which was related to the rustling of stolen cattle lead to the killing of the dreaded Buharin Daji by one of his former allies, Dogo Gide.
