#JusticeForBlessing: Police Investigating Rape And Murder Of Student In North-central Nigeria

Omowumi Blessing, a University of Ilorin Student, Kwara State, North-central Nigeria, was murdered in her home.

The rape and murder of Olajide Omowunmi Blessing, a student of the University of Ilorin in Kwara State, North-central Nigeria, has been confirmed by the Kwara Police Command on Thursday, June 3, 2021.

Blessing was a 300-level student of the Agricultural Science Department and was reported to have been murdered after being raped in her home in Tanke, Ilorin, on Tuesday.

Her killer also left a note on her chest containing a message, ‘Unilorin doesn’t forgive’ along with her student identification card.

According to a report by Newswire, Mohammed Bagega, the state’s Commissioner of Police, said the victim resided with her elder sister.

“The elder sister came back from work at about 6 pm WAT on Tuesday, June 1, 2021,  saying that she had tried several times to reach her on the phone but couldn’t as the phone kept ringing.”

The police chief in a statement  disclosed that “She came back from work to meet the door of her apartment locked and couldn’t gain entry despite repeated knocks on the door. She then called some neighbours who helped to break open the door.”

They all met the deceased lying dead on the floor when they entered with her two hands tied to the back and her mouth gagged. She was met naked, bruises were noticed on her private parts, her mouth was covered, among others.

“Also, a note said to have been written on a piece of paper was placed on her chest containing a message, ‘Unilorin doesn’t forgive.’”

“The people later informed the police at F’ Division Police Station, who discovered the dead body, snapped the picture, and took the corpse to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) for autopsy.”

However, the Commissioner of Police said he had directed an immediate investigation and arrest of the attacker.

In May, HumAngle reported that Iniobong Umoren, a 26-year-old job-seeking Nigerian Lady, was murdered and buried in a shallow grave in Akwa Ibom State, South-south Nigeria, by her supposed employer, Uduak Frank Akpan.

Shortly after, Blessing Otunla’s unclad body was found in a brackish ditch in Iddo village, Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, on Sunday, May 23, 2021. Her death drew a spectacle of inquiry and anger.

She was a 24-year-old English graduate from the University of Abuja, and had travelled from Ibadan, Oyo State, Southwest Nigeria, on Saturday, May 22, to collect her Bachelor’s degree certificate.

Many believed she was raped and then brutally bludgeoned to death because of the status of her corpse.

The two Blessings and Umoren are just a few of the many who have lost their lives to the violence and atrocities committed against women in Nigeria.

Despite the increase in activism against violence against women, frustration at the state’s failure to address the issue continues to grow.
