ISWAP Terrorists Ambush Nigeria’s Counter-Insurgency Chief

ISWAP attacked the Operation Lafiya Dole commander in Borno, Northeast Nigeria.

On Sunday, the convoy of Farouq Yahaya, Commandant of Nigeria’s counter-insurgency operation, came under attack from members of Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a splinter group of Boko Haram terror group.

Farouq Yahaya, a Major General, took over Operation Lafiya Dole’s command in April 2020 from Major General Olusegun Adeniyi.

HumAngle learned that ISWAP insurgents attacked the theatre commander at Garin Kuturu village between Auno and Jakana towns along the Maiduguri —Damaturu highway.

At least two soldiers were reported to have died during a firefight between the Nigerian troops and the terrorists.

The insurgents took away one gun truck, HumAngle was informed. It’s unclear the number of insurgents killed during the engagement.

On Jan. 6 2020, insurgents laid an ambush against the convoy of the former  Theater Commander Major General Olusegun Adeniyi.

The convoy came under anti-aircraft guns, machine guns, and Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG) fired about two kilometres to Auno in Kaga Local Government of Borno State while returning from Jakana where he visited troops’ location.

The Maiduguri-Damaturu road has remained volatile and occasionally dangerous for security forces and civilians.

ISWAP broke away from Boko Haram in 2016. Both groups have engaged in a bloody campaign of insurgency in the Northeast and Lake Chad Basin.
