ISWAP Kills 2 Policemen As Service Chiefs Visit Maiduguri

The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on Sunday attacked Nigerian police and army units in Magumeri as the new military chiefs arrived in Maiduguri, Borno State Capital, on their maiden operation visit of the insurgency zone.

The insurgents killed two police personnel and burnt their vehicle along the Maiduguri-Magumeri-Gubio Road, HumAngle learnt.

The insurgents were suspected to be heading to Maiduguri.

The Nigerian Army base in Magumeri responded to the attack by firing from their artillery weapon system.

The location of the incident was a few kilometres from Maiduguri Airport, where the Nigerian Air Force Aircraft conveying the service chiefs landed.

The service chiefs also visited Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum.

The governor called for aggressive collaboration with the armed forces of neighbouring countries of Chad, Cameroon and Niger Republic to tackle the insurgency.

Zulum also sought better cooperation between the military and civilians to bridge the trust deficit between the two groups and increase the military’s access to credible intelligence gathering which was necessary for success in the fight against insurgency.
