ISWAP Advance Into Kukawa Town In Borno State

The Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), a splinter group of Boko Haram attacked Nigerian troops in the historic town of Kukawa in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno, on Tuesday.

HumAngle gathered that ISWAP fighters, camouflaged in military uniforms, attacked a military contingent in the town and destroyed multiple armoured and utility vehicles.

The number of military casualties and the scale of destruction in the town is still unclear.

Last week, hundreds of displaced persons under military escort returned to the town, which lies close to the shores of Lake Chad.

A source told HumAngle the attack is concerning because returnees could see the attack as a sign that the Government is not capable of protecting them.

The source added that this will force them to cooperate with ISWAP.

Babakura Kolo, head of a local militia, informed AFP that the jihadist seized people who had just returned to their homes after spending two years in a displacement camp.

On August 10, Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari gave assurances that security will be restored to Borno State and the Northeast during a meeting with governors of the North East Zone and security chiefs at the Council Chamber, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The decade-long conflict with Boko Haram has left 30,000 people dead and displaced more than 3 million.
