INL Donates $325,000 Worth Of Equipment To Nigeria Police In Borno

Equipment worth over $325,000 has been donated to the Nigeria Police by the Office of the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL) of the United States Embassy.

The donated equipment would be given to the Borno State Mobile Police Division to aid in areas affected by the Boko Haram insurgency and restore civilian authority, the mission said.

The equipment donated included bulletproof protective vests, bulletproof helmets, goggles and 20 ballistic shields. They were provided to the 500 officers currently serving the mobile police force in the state.

An additional tent, mosquito nets, first aid boxes, heavy-duty flashlights and foldable mattresses were also among the equipment provided.

“By providing these supplies and equipment, INL is complimenting prior USAID investments in Borno State through the Office of Transition Initiatives,” the embassy added.

James Jewett, the INL director, while presenting the equipment to Akeera Yunuss Mohammed, Borno State Commissioner of Police, expressed hope that the equipment would be used to ensure counter-insurgency operations in the entire northeast.

“We are proud to stand with Nigerian law enforcement on the front line of maintaining peace and security. This donation will improve the health and security of those brave men and women committed to providing law and order,” he added

The INL office assists foreign governments in countering crime, illegal drugs and instability abroad by cooperating with partner nations and international organisations in building and reforming criminal justice systems.
