Improvised Explosive Devices Kill Army Officer, Injure Two Others In Northeast

On Monday, a contingent of the Nigerian Army 198 Special Forces Battalion on patrol around 5.30 pm encountered improvised explosive device along Maiduguri-Damaturu Road, in Mainok.

The exploding devices killed one officer, Second Lieutenant, Abdullahi Alhassan and while inflicting injuries on two other soldiers. The contingent of over a dozen soldiers and officers were in two military gun trucks when the incident happened.

A similar incident occurred within the field operations of the Lafiya Dole theatre last week, resulting in the death of one officer, a lieutenant while one other received serious injuries.

Improvised explosive devices and ambushes continue to pose a major threat to soldiers fighting Boko Haram and ISWAP, due to inadequate operational protection and mobility gears for troops.

In January, insurgents attacked soldiers near their trench outside Mainok village and in May, the troops of 156 Battalion in Mainok were further attacked by in insurgents who came 10 gun trucks.
