Hoodlums Disguise As Buyers, Attack Market In North-central Nigeria
A market in Benue State, North-central Nigeria has come under attack from a group of hoodlums.
A market in Katsina-Ala in Benue State, North-central Nigeria, came under attack Wednesday, March 24, after some gunmen disguised themselves as buyers.
One person was killed and nine others injured as police repelled the attack at the popular Abaji market.
The attack took place when Samuel Ortom, Governor of Benue State visited Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja, over the security situation in the state, following a failed attempt on his life on Saturday, March 20.
According to the Police in Benue State, the assailants stormed the market at about 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday and started shooting sporadically.
Catherine Anene, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), said security forces returned the fire and repelled the attack, pushing the terrorists to the forest.
Anene, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) stated that more officers were deployed to the attack area to ensure search operation and to assist the security forces on the ground.
“At about 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, while traders were closing from Abaji Market in Katsina-ala, bandits who disguised themselves as buyers started shooting sporadically and killed one person while nine others were injured,” she said.
“The joint operation of Police and other security agencies returned fire and repelled the bandits to the forest with gunshot injuries where they have been cordoned for search.”
The body of the victim had been deposited at the Primary Healthcare Centre, Abaji, while the injured persons were receiving treatment at General Hospital Katsina-Ala, the police said.
