The Divisional Police Officer of Gidan Madi police station in Sokoto’s Tangaza Local Government Area, northwest Nigeria, DSP Aliyu Bello Bungudu, has been killed by gunmen in a raid that took place at the dead of the night between Wednesday and Thursday.
One account received by HumAngle estimated that the attackers were over 50. Several other police officers were injured during the attack and three people were said to have been abducted, including two wives of a prominent businessman in the community.
DSP Bungudu and a second unnamed officer were killed in an attempt to rescue the kidnap victims. Pictures obtained by HumAngle show a deceased, uniformed policeman at the back of a black patrol vehicle, whose glasses had been shattered.
A resident of the community, Abdoul Auserh, said the bandits were heavily armed.
“At the moment, it is confirmed that there was an unwarranted attack on the Gidan Madi Divisional Headquarters last night,” spokesman of the state police command, ASP Muhammad Sadiq, was reported to have said.
“I enjoin us all to await further information on the attack at the conclusion of the investigation that had already been directed by the Commissioner who is at the moment conducting an on the spot assessment of the Division,” he said.
During a different incident last month, in the same Local Government Area, many traders were kidnapped by gunmen as well as a nursing mother, said to be the wife of the town’s traditional leader, Magajin Garin Sulli.
In May, 74 people were killed and many others injured in the state in a series of attacks that affected four villages in Sabon Birni Local Government Area.
