Gunfire, Explosives In Prison Break In Southeast Nigeria

Suspected separatists Monday morning freed inmates at a correctional facility in Imo State, Southeast Nigeria after they used explosives to gain access to the facility.

A coordinated attack Monday morning at a correctional facility in Imo State, Southeast Nigeria by suspected separatist fighters, has led to the escape of a yet-to-be-verified number of inmates from the facility, with dozens of casualties.

HumAngle gathered the attack occurred between 1  a.m. and 3 a.m., lasting for about two hours.

The armed group gained access into the prison using explosives.The facility houses about 1,500 inmates who have now been reportedly freed.

The armed group also attacked the State Police Headquarters and torched vehicles parked on the premises.


They also freed detainees in the cell of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

Monday’s attack comes on the heels of a spate of attacks on security formations in the Southeast, suspected to be connected to the separatist group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

When contacted by HumAngle, Francis Enabore, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, said he would release a statement “soon.” An hour after, he was yet to make the statement.

Orlando Ikeokwu, the state police spokesperson could not be reached as of press time.
