Gabon To Help Timber Sector In Industrialisation Ambitions

The government of Gabon would help operators in the timber transformation industry achieve their goals of becoming one of the biggest employers in the country.

The intention was revealed by the country’s Minister of Water and Forestry, Lee White, during a tour of some wood transformation installations in the country in August.

To this effect, the Gabonese government intends to do its best towards helping all timber companies operating throughout the national territory to acquire wood transformation factories.

Speaking during a control and follow-up mission in Koulamoutou and Lastourville, the minister promised that the government would work hand-in-hand with companies that want to be involved in timber industrialization.

“The President of the Republic, His Excellency Ali Bongo Ondimba has instructed us to meet the challenges and work hard to achieve this goal, namely the creation of 30,000 jobs within three years.

We have an obligation to achieve results and we must achieve this objective. We are prepared to accompany you in your industrialization projects and the passage to second and third phase transformation”, the Chinese-born minister declared.

During this second phase of his tour of timber industrial installations, the minister visited the transformation factories of the Societe des Bois de Lastourville (SBL) and the Societe des Parquets du Gabon (SPG) where he had discussions with the managements of the two companies on their various projects.

He also discussed the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on their establishments with the bosses of the timber transformation factories.

In Lastourville, situated in the Ogooue-Lolo province, Mr. Lee White reminded the business operators of the importance of the locality which is a business hub, and its relevance to the Owendo seaport.

This important logistical platform enables the management and transportation of transformed wood from factories in the forest to the port of Owendo.

“The evacuation of containers coming from Lastourville facilitates the easing of the stockage capacity of the Owendo port. It also reduces cost and augments the exportation of timber.

“That also enables working more efficiently, notably in the amelioration of the profitability of the enterprise and finally to create more jobs”, the minister concluded.
