Gabon To Commence COVID-19 Vaccination This Week

Although the Gabon government has not fixed a commencement date for COVID-19 vaccination, there are indications that the exercise will start this week.

Vaccination against the coronavirus will begin in Gabon this week.

The hint was given during a meeting between President Ali Bongo, Prime Minister Rose Christiane Ossouka Raponda, and the Minister of Health, Dr Guy Patrick Ndong, on Monday, March 22.

During the meeting, the national vaccination plan which was finalised last weekend, was handed over to President Bongo and it was generally expected that the vaccination will begin this week.

“The head of state today has all the vaccination plans which would be publicly implemented,” said the Prime Minister, after her audience with the President.

“That is to say, we are going to make a global announcement with a view to better educate the public on the content of the plan.”

The government has not given the definite date during the week that the exercise would commence.

“Normally, the vaccination is supposed to begin this week, taking into consideration the urgency of the actual health situation,” a source close to the Prime Minister revealed without giving the exact day of the week.

The Prime Minister revealed that the vaccination campaign would begin with the 100,000 doses of the vaccine donated by the Chinese government, which were received on March 12.

“The vaccination campaign will be able to begin in Gabon”, President Bongo announced in a post on social media Monday without precising the date.

Jessye Ella Ekogha, the Presidential Special Adviser and spokesperson of the Presidency declared Monday that “The vaccine is seen as the principal door to get us out of this health crisis caused by the COVID-19. The vaccination plan is ready and the campaign will begin within the next few days.”

It is certain the first vaccinations would be carried out in the national capital Libreville this week.
