President Ali Bongo Ondimba of Gabon on Monday convened a meeting with the various stakeholders to discuss how to prepare for the eventual arrival of the new strain of COVID-19 in the country.
There is a new COVID-19 strain that is more transmissible than the original one and this new strain has been causing havoc in several countries worldwide.
The said strain has already arrived in South Africa and a few other African countries.
Gabon does not want to be taken unawares which is why the country’s head of state.
According to President Ali Bongo, the objective of the meeting was “to reflect together within the hypothesis where Gabon would be on its own turn concerned, on the adaptation of our response and the supplementary measures of protection susceptible of being adopted”.
The current concern throughout the world now is the rate at which the coronavirus is mutating bringing about a strain that is spreading at an alarming rate.
If this strain is detected in Gabon, it may bring about the alarming increase in transmissions.
“To face all eventualities, Gabon would continue to show proof of anticipation and to apply the principle of precaution and at the same time actively work towards the national vaccination campaign, ”the president said.
He estimated that anticipation and precaution are the principles which make for success in the sanitary response of the country up till now.
“…I have demanded that the elaboration of the national vaccination plan is accelerated,” he added.
In effect, the new varieties of the virus pose a serious problem of transmission and if the new strain has not yet been confirmed to be more deadly, their capacity to accelerate the pandemic is frightening.
To delay their propagation and thus their arrival in Gabonese territory, certain experts suggest that the government takes preventive measures at the level of the frontiers and to trace all persons arriving from risky countries.
