Fire Destroys IDPs Camp

A fire outbreak in a community sheltering mostly Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Sulemanti in Magumeri, Borno State, has destroyed properties, food items and several makeshift homes, sources said.

Magumeri is about 50km from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, in Northeast Nigeria, where Boko Haram insurgency has displaced populations and caused deaths in a campaign which has lasted more than 10 years.

The fire  occurred on Thursday evening and affected multiple homes, according to witnesses.

Fire incidents are regular at IDPs camps in Borno State and some have led to deaths.

In November 2020, a fire incident destroyed 1,200 tents at an IDPs camp in Gajiram, Nganzai Local Government Area of Borno State.

HumAngle gathered that about 200 makeshift homes were destroyed as a result and eyewitnesses confirmed the death of at least one person.

In April 2020, at least 14 persons lost their lives in a fire at a camp for displaced persons in Ngala Local Government Area of Borno State.

The Muna garage camp for IDPs in Maiduguri was also gutted by fire in May 2020.
