EU Assists 163,000 Cameroon Flood Victims With $656,000

The European Union has granted the sum of 328 million FCFA (about US$656,000) to Cameroon to enable it to meet up with its social obligations towards victims of floods that hit various parts of the country in 2020.

The money so disbursed would permit the country’s humanitarian partners to assist the most vulnerable persons affected by the disaster.

“The rains and floods have since August hit the Cameroon coastline as well as the Far North of the country.

“In total, 163,000 persons have been displaced principally in the Far North region, a zone which is already unstable and difficult to access, while neighboring countries in the zone (Chad and Nigeria) have been facing the same difficulties”, the European Union declared in a communiqué made public in Yaounde on Thursday.

HumAngle reports that Cameroon is not the only country benefiting from such EU assistance.

The European nations, it should be noted, have also made available the sum of 1.5 billion FCFA (about US$2.3 million) for assistance to populations affected by floods in Burkina Faso, Niger, the Central African Republic and Chad.

“With these urgent funds, the European Union reinforces the humanitarian support to populations which have suffered from serious floods.

“The humanitarian partners of the EU would thus distribute portable water, food assistance, kits of basic necessity and provide shelter and humanitarian services to the populations hard hit by the floods”, declared Janez Lenarcic, the EU Commissioner for Crisis Management.

It is necessary to recall here that the European Union and its member states are the leading donors of humanitarian assistance in the world.

The urgent assistance is the European expression of solidarity with the persons who are in need throughout the world.

It is intended to save lives, to prevent and reduce human suffering and to preserve the integrity and human dignity of the populations which are victims of natural catastrophes.
