#EndSARS: Police Dissolves SARS, Nigerians Await Implementation

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Muhammed Adamu, on Sunday announced the dissolution of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) but Nigerians remain sceptical.

He added that all officers serving within the unit would be redeployed immediately.

Over the past few weeks, Nigerians have staged protests in multiple cities across the world, on Facebook and the popular micro-blogging Twitter, demanding an end to SARS.

The squad, under the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, was created to curb violent crimes such as armed robbery but SARS has become notorious for moving around in casual wears, unmarked cars and conducting extrajudicial killings, detention and brutality.

Meanwhile, during the protests, the police employed force to disperse protesters across the country.

In Abuja, the country’s capital, protesters were shot at and tear-gassed three days in a row.

Following the IGP’s announcements, Nigerians remain sceptical and have called for full implementation to end police brutality.
