#ENDSARS: Panel Rejects Petition Over Lack Of Victim Family’s Consent

The Judicial Commission of Inquiry set up by Nasarawa State Government, Northcentral Nigeria to investigate cases of police brutality strikes out a petition filed by Professor Amos Awodiya, a human rights activist over the alleged extra-judicial killing of one Murtala Abdullahi by one of the operatives of the now-disbanded Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) in Akwanga.

Justice Badamasi Maina, chairman of the panel, which is sitting in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State struck out the petition at the opening of the panel’s sitting on Tuesday citing the failure of the petitioner to prove to the panel that he was representing the victim’s family.

Maina noted that the elder brother of the deceased insisted that the family had no business with the professor.

Abdullahi, elder brother to the deceased told the panel that the legal representative known by his family is Ali Akaba who has since submitted a memorandum on behalf of his family.

While responding, Professor Awodiya argued that he was engaged by the victim’s family as a human right activist but has nothing to lose if the elder brother of the deceased denied him before the panel.

Meanwhile, Musa Dahiru, a resident of Lafia present at the panel sitting called for a thorough investigation into all the petitions against the disbanded SARS to ensure that justice is carried out.
