ENDSARS: Kwara Panel Commences Public Hearing, Receives 18 Petitions

Kwara State Judicial Panel of Inquiry into cases of police brutality says it has received a total of 18 petitions, as it commences sitting on Monday in Ilorin, the state capital, Northcentral Nigeria.

The 10-man panel chaired by retired Justice I.B Garba was inaugurated by the State Government to investigate complaints of police brutality, human rights abuses, and extrajudicial killings by the #EndSARS protesters.

Justice Garba explained that the hearing was a rollover of the petitions received between October 26 and November 8, 2020, stating that proper hearing of the complaints would begin on Wednesday, November 17.

“The general public is hereby informed that those to appear include all those who have earlier submitted memoranda and those willing to give oral complaints on police brutality, human rights abuses and extra-judicial killings,” the panel chairman said.

In that regard, Abdulganiyu Bello, Kwara State chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), said the association would be offering petitioners who could not acquire the service of a lawyer a free legal representation throughout the hearing.

Of the 18 petitions, 12 were assessed and adjourned to a later date due to the delay by the State police command to respond to some complaints forwarded to it.

The chairman of the panel, I.B Garba, therefore adjourned the proper hearing of all the petitions till Wednesday, November 18.
