Electricity Repair Team In Borno Hit By Landmine

The team had set out to repair electricity installations destroyed by ISWAP.

A vehicle carrying several electricity workers and a security personnel was hit Saturday morning by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Borno State, Northeast Nigeria, HumAngle can report.

The victims were part of the team working to restore electricity to the Maiduguri, Borno State capital, after Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) destroyed a tower in the notorious Mainok area along the Maiduguri – Damaturu road.

More towers were subsequently damaged during repairs on the faulty 330kV Transmission Company of Nigeria (TRCN) line.

It’s unclear the conditions of the victims involved in the incident as of this report’s time.

Mainok is notorious for ISWAP activities, including setting up checkpoints where they abduct commuters and carry out attacks on security forces.

With the support of the Borno State Government, the Transmission Company of Nigeria had mobilised to hasten the restoration of electricity supply to Maiduguri and environs, following the damage to its high tension towers T159, T160 and T161 of 330 Kilo Volt (KV) Damaturu-Maiduguri Transmission Line.

The demolition of the electricity tower and planting of IED could be part of the groups broader economic war against Maiduguri.
