Despite Growing Insecurity, Nigerian President Assures Commitment To Preserving Security

As insecurity grows across many states in Nigeria, the country's president, Muhammadu Buhari, says he is committed to preserving the security of the country.

Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, says he remains focused on addressing and preserving the security situation of Nigeria.

Nigeria is facing insecurity challenges including insurgency in the Northeast, banditry in the Northwest and North-central, herders-farmers clashes in many parts of the country, kidnappings and inter-ethnic clashes in the South.

Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, who represented the President while appearing on a Channels Television programme, Sunrise Daily on Friday, March 26, accused members of  opposition for exploiting the country’s security challenges despite the government’s efforts to tackle the insecurity facing the nation.

“This President is focused on securing this country, he is focused on the unity of this country and he will preserve it,” Shehu said.

“I want to assure Nigerians that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is addressing multiple challenges that are facing the country especially in dealing with security and yet we are still making progress in agriculture, economy, anti-corruption, which are the key policies that brought the party and the government to office,” he added.

“It is sad for the country that opposition is exploiting some of these things. It is quite unfortunate and I want to assure that the president remains focused on preserving the security and unity of this country.”

While Nigerians have expressed concerns over the President’s handling of the insecurity challenges, the presidential spokesperson claimed that the nation is being run under the most democratic government in Nigeria’s history.

“People should be free to say whatever because this country is under the best democratic government that we have had since the fourth republic,” Shehu argued.

“The President will not lock up people, there is no assassination by state actors under Buhari and so, therefore, people can say whatever they want to say. They will go home and sleep very soundly.”
