#COVID19: Gabon Authorises Use Of Russian Vaccine Sputnik V

Gabon’s health ministry has approved the Russian #COVID19 to be used in the country.

The Gabonese Ministry of Health has authorised the Russian vaccine Sputnik V for its vaccination campaign against the COVID-19.

According to an announcement by the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), the authorisation was given on Thursday within the context of the procedure of urgent utilisation authorisation.

This turnaround by the Gabonese government comes after the spokesperson of the Presidency of the Republic had earlier announced that the government was in talks with AstraZeneca and Moderna for the acquisition of their vaccines, adding that the Russian vaccine Sputnik was not under consideration since it had not yet received the validation of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The Gabonese decision comes at a time when the Russian vaccine has been validated by international medical evaluators and the said approval published in the Lancet, one of the most respected medical journals in the world.

The Lancet dubs Sputnik V as “a vaccine for all humanity. “Studies of this vaccine have not shown any serious complications provoked by it,” it said.

Gabon is the fourth African country and 29th country in the world to approve the use of the Sputnik V vaccine in its national anti-COVID-19 vaccination programme.

Sputnik V is one of the first three COVID-19 vaccines in the world in terms of the number of approvals given for its use by various government regulators.

“The Sputnik V is in high demand worldwide, and more and more African countries are ready to buy it because the Russian vaccine is one of the best in the world,” said the president of the RDIF, Kirill Dmitriev.

“Sputnik V would constitute an important part of the national portfolio of Gabonese vaccines thanks to an efficacy of more than 90 per cent, its security, easy distribution and a number of other advantages.”
