#COVID19: Chinese Vaccine Has No Side Effects, Gabon Govt Claims

Despite fears among citizens on the possible side effects of the Chinese COVID-19 vaccine, the Gabon government says the vaccine is safe for use.

The Government of Gabon says none of the over 5000 Gaboneses vaccinated with the Chinese COVID-19 vaccine, Sinopharm, have experienced any negative side effects.

This follows allegations in the country, particularly on social media, that a patient in the Libreville University Teaching Hospital was suffering from complications after taking the Sinopharm vaccine.

Although the Sinopharm vaccine has been described by the World Health Organization (WHO) as being among the “surest and most efficacious” COVID-19 vaccine, a large segment of the Gabonese community is yet to be convinced about its efficacy.

“In fact, there are several Gabonese who are currently carrying out a campaign against the Chinese vaccine,” a Gabonese said.

In a communique made public on Thursday, Dr Guy Patrick Obiang Ndong, the Minister of Health, denounced what he described as “false information,” insisting that “to date, the Sinopharm vaccine has been administered on 5,115 persons, 67 of whom have received their second dose in conformity with the protocol of the vaccine.”

“No major secondary effect has been registered by the teams of ‘pharmacovigilance’ of the National Committee of Vaccination Against the COVID-19.”

The Ministry of Health, which describes the false information as being the handiwork of “ill-intentioned persons” has invited citizens to be vigilant, adding that these actions are “intended to discredit the national vaccination campaign against the COVID-19 which is going on with success.”
