#COVID19: Chad Receives 2.8 Million Dollars Medical Materials From AfDB
The support by AfDB for Chad was put in place by UNHCR to help combat COVID-19 in the country.
The Chadian government has received medical materials worth $2.8 million donated by the African Development Bank (AfDB) to support member countries of the G5 Sahel to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
The G5 Sahel countries are Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, and Chad. The handing over ceremony on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 took place at the Chadian Ministry of Public Health and National Solidarity.
Speaking at the ceremony, Iris Blom, the Assistant Representative of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, (UNHCR) in charge of Protection, thanked the representative of the African Development Bank for the donation.
This contribution, the UNHCR official said, is also effected through the putting in place of water and sanitary infrastructure as well as the reinforcement of the capacity of health personnel in terms of prevention and taking charge.
Dr Abdelrahim Younous Ali, the Chadian Secretary of State for the Economy and Development Planning, on his part said the project is subdivided into three components, namely support to the sanitary response to the COVID-19, support to the resilience of communities and technical assistance as well as the management of the project.
He assured that all the necessary dispositions would be taken to ensure that the materials would be used for the purposes for which they are destined.
Dr Djiddi Ali Sougoudi, the Chadian Secretary of State for Public Health said this first lot of equipment would go to help the Chadian government in its fight against the COVID-19.
Ali Mahamat Lamine Zeine, Resident Representative of the African Development Bank in Chad, underlined that through the donation of the materials, that “the African Development Bank is very anxious to see African populations in good health.”
The main objective of the project is to reinforce the capacities of the G5 Sahel countries in reducing the propagation of the COVID-19 and support the resilience of vulnerable communities.
The reinforcement of operational capacities of the Executive Secretariat of the G5 Sahel and the five national coordination committees is also concerned by this support.
The project is financed by the African Development Bank and put in place by the UNHCR.
It is in support of this G5 Sahel initiative that the African Development Bank decided in July 2020 to accord an urgent financial assistance of 10.5 billion FCFA (about US$20 million) in order to contribute to the fight against the Covid-19 in the G5 Sahel countries.
