Researchers in Israel have invented a self-cleaning face mask that can kill coronavirus with heat that can be drawn using a mobile phone charger, a report said.
The face mask, the team of the researchers said, could be reused by sourcing power using a phone charger, Reuters reported.
They warned that users should not wear the mask while it is plugged to a power source.
Prof. Yair Ein-Eli told of Technion University, Haifa, said they were motivated to solve the shortage of disposable masks that were neither economically nor environmentally friendly.
“You have to make it reusable and friendly, and this is our solution,” he told Reuters.
The reusable face mask that looks like a standard N95 face mask, has a USB port similar to the ones on standard smartphones.
The charge drawn from the power source heats the carbon fibres at the inner layer of the mask up to 70 degrees Celsius – a high temperature that can kill the virus.
The team submitted a patent to the United States in late March and are discussing commercialising the product with private sectors.
The reusable face masks, the team said, could likely sell at one dollar above the typical price of disposable face masks.
