Court Martial Jails Soldier 55 Years For Killing WHO Worker In Zamfara

On Wednesday, a General Court martial jailed a soldier 55 years for killing a World Health Organisation (WHO) employee in Zamfara State in 2014.

The court sitting in Abuja sentenced Lance Corporal Ibrahim Babangida to 55 years imprisonment for culpable homicide, burglary and theft.

Babangida, was serving with Operation Mesa against banditry in Zamfara State when at about 10p.m. on August 11, 2014, without justification, he shot and killed Mr. Bello Abdullahi Aliyu, a WHO employee, and also robbed him of his car, a mobile phone and N600,000.

He was also accused of robbing other persons at different times.


The President of the court, Maj.-Gen. Priye Fakrogha, while reading the judgement,, said the soldier would serve 40 years for homicide.

“Having listened to the plea of litigation of the defence counsel and the submission of the prosecution counsel, this General Court Martial finds the accused soldier guilty as he earlier pleaded of all the four-count charges.

“Count one on culpable homicide not punishable with death contrary to and punishable under Section 224 of the Penal Code CAP P3, Laws of the Federation 2004 be awarded 40 years of imprisonment,” Fakrogha declared.

He added that Babangida would serve five years each for the second, third and fourth charges.

The judgment is subject to confirmation by the Nigerian Army Council.
