Central African Republic: 3R Rebels In Accused Of Perturbing Electoral Registration

The Retour, Réclamation et Réhabilitation (3R) rebel movement in the Central African Republic is being accused of having as its main objective now, the perturbation of the registration process for the December 27, 2020 elections.

This follows the chasing away of electoral enumerators by fighters of the rebel movement from the Niem-Yelewa rural council area last Saturday August 26, 2020.

According to security sources in the area, a team of electoral registration agents from Bouar who had arrived at Niem-Yelewa at 15 hours in the afternoon were chased away by fighters of the 3R rebel movement and forced to return to Bouar.

One official said they would remain in Bouar until they had word from the authorities in the capital Bangui.

The actions of the 3R movement in Niem-Yelewa follow on the heels of similar actions in Koui, (Ouham-Pende), Ngaoundaye and Aba in Nana-Mambere, in all of which places the 3R stopped electoral agents from carrying out their duties.

It should be recalled that since coming out of the marquis on May 14, rebel leader Abass Sidiki has plunged the entire Northwest of the country, especially the Nana-Mambere, Ouham-Pende and Mambere-Kadei prefectures into chaos through incessant attacks on the civilian populations.

The attacks also extended to the Central African Republic national army and the Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the Central African Republic popularly known by its French acronym MINUSCA forces.

They have attacked MINUSCA military bases, attacked military patrols, attacked and destroyed villages stealing valuable property and have subjected the civilian populations to untold violence and racketeering. They had also perturbed the activities of census enumerators.

The 3R movement, it should be noted, was created during the transition period led by President Catherine Samba-Panza and was originally made up of criminal gangs and highway robbers, who have today become useful tools in the hands of political pundits gunning for power in the country.

In August, MINUSCA troops supported by units of the Central African Republic army launched an operation dubbed “Ala londo” against 3R positions in the Northwest of the country destroying several of their bases.
